In The Soul Bargain by Kovessa Nighte, we’re thrown into a world that is literally a matter of life and death. A sister willing to make a bargain and a reaper with some serious baggage end up bound together, forcing the two of them to explore the symbiotic relationship between love and loss. I went into this one expecting a standard paranormal romance, but there were definitely some surprises up this book’s sleeves that had me begging for more!

Plot Summary
Maris bargained with Death.
Her soul in exchange for her brother’s.
Malakai is a reaper bound by duty and burdened by guilt. When he attempts to claim her soul, it resists him. Unable to take it, he marks her instead, binding them together in ways neither fully understands.
Forced to reap souls, Maris is drawn into a hidden world between life and death.
But when she unknowingly stumbles upon ancient language carved into stone, she fractures a seal meant to remain untouched. Something long imprisoned begins to stir, and its corruption starts to spread.
Now the bargain that saved her brother may cost far more than her soul… and the fragile bond forming between her and Malakai.
Because some bargains cannot be undone.
And some loves are powerful enough to defy death itself.
Quality of Writing
Rating: 4/5
The writing in The Soul Bargain was easy to get into and follow. There were a few tiny typos scattered throughout, but nothing that actually pulled me out of the story. The author’s word choice was varied enough to keep things interesting without being overly complicated, which made for a really smooth and engaging read from start to finish.
Plot Development
Rating: 4/5
The pacing in The Soul Bargain was super solid for a standalone. Nothing felt rushed or dragged out. I did hit a few spots of confusion toward the end regarding how the antagonist actually factored into everything, but overall, the plot was super interesting. I have yet to read a book with a Grim Reaper MMC, so that kept me hooked and intrigued the whole way through.
Characters
Rating: 4/5
This story mainly sticks with Maris and Malakai, with just a few side characters popping in to help set the scene. To be clear, that isn’t a criticism toward The Soul Bargain, since most of the action happens in a unique alternate location to the real world. I really liked the vibe between the two of them, even if their chemistry felt a little stiff at the start. Where the book really shines though, is how Maris and Malakai handle the emotional side of things – seeing them navigate love and loss together was definitely the best part.
Ease of Reading
Rating: 4/5
The plot and world building in The Soul Bargain was super easy to follow without ever feeling like filler. It strikes a great balance where everything is simple enough to breeze through in one sitting, but the setting still feels distinct and immersive. Definitely a smooth as silk read if you’re looking for something that won’t have headache inducing lore!
Ending
Rating: 5/5
The ending of The Soul Bargain was truly bittersweet – it actually made me cry, which doesn’t happen often! This author does such a stellar job of exploring themes of love and loss, and it’s really what made the whole story feel so compelling. It was the perfect emotional payoff for the journey Maris and Malakai went through together.
Would I Recommend This Book
Yes! If you’re looking for a short and sweet standalone that hits home on topics like death, love, and grief, definitely pick this one up.
Overall Rating

Although the romance felt a little stiff at the beginning, the emotional growth between the characters and the exploration of themes of love and loss made it a great read, with an ending that seriously pulled at my heartstrings!
